Structural Dynamics/Vibration Analysis of Vertical Motor-Pump assembly

This project was undertaken to study the high vibration experienced during testing of the pump-motor assembly. The objective of this project was to study the root cause of the high vibrations and mitigate the same to ensure safe and trouble free operation. The analysis was carried out to calculate the first few natural frequencies of the rotor-bearing and the structure. It was found that there were two symmetric structure bending modes along the shaft axis at the operating speed of 3600 rpm which corresponded to 60 Hz structure frequency. The root cause for the high vibrations was due to the flexible stool on which the motor assembly was bolted. The base of the stool on which the motor-pump assembly were attached was made rigid to mitigate the high vibrations.
